MSK Medications Flashcards
Disease-modifying Antirheumatic Agents
Slow or halt the progression of rheumatic disease
Inhibiting immune response responsible for rheumatic disease
Therapists should recognize that many of the agents have a high incidence of toxicity
Glucocorticoid Agents (Corticosteroids)
Reduce inflammation in chronic conditions
Can cause muscle atrophy
Drug-induced Cushing syndrome can also occur
Can cause weakening with breakdown of supporting tissues
A PT needs to wear a mask because of the compromised immune system
Therapist must be aware of signs of toxicity including moon face, buffalo hump, and personality changes.
Nonopioid Agents
Provides pain relief, produce anti-inflammatory effects and reduces fever
Masked pain
Complaints of stomach pain should be taken seriously
Tylenol, NSAIDS, Aspirin, Aleve, Advil and Celebrex
Opioid Agents (Narcotics)
Provide pain relief for acute severe pain management
Stimulates opioid receptors within the CNS to prevent pain impulses from reaching their destination
Side effects: mood swings, sedation, confusion, etc.
PT should monitor for signs of respiratory depression
Treatment should be done after 2 hours ingesting opioid
