What is the 1st step in physical exam of msk lower extremities?
Inspect the skin for symmetry, pallor, edema, color changes, HAIR distribution
What is the 2nd step in physical exam of msk lower extremities?
To PALPATE pulses
posterior tibial, dorsalis, pedis, popliteal and GRADE 2+
What is the 3rd step in physical exam of msk lower extremities?
PALPATE calves for tenderness HOMAN’s sign and ankles for edema and grade
What is the 4th step in physical exam of msk lower extremities?
Assess AROM and muscle strength of hips, knees, ankles, and feet AROM
Hips abduct/ adduct
Flex and extend
internal/ external rotation
KNEE flex/ extend
ankle dorsiflex/ plantarflex
inversion/eversion
What are the msk special tests and what do they test for?
McMurray test- tests for torn meniscus (palpable auditory click)
ACL Lachman test- Laxity of ACL
Ballottement and bulge sign-patellar effusion
valgus and varus stress test collateral ligament injury performed at 0 degree 20- 30 degree
straight leg raise test- lumbar radiculopathy
thompson test- patient is prone tests for tendon rupture
What do you check after doing special test?
Stabilize pelvis, test AROM of SPINE.
must be standing
AROM: flex, extend, hyperextend
rotate, lateral bend
Describe varus and valgus
Varus bow legged
Valgus knock knee
Peds correct technique for scolosis detection; girls 10-12 and boys 13-14
