MSK Anatomy- Joints Flashcards
What are joints?
Joints are the meeting place between 2 or more bones
What are articulations?
Joints are articulations !
What are fibrous joints?
-Bones that are united by fibrous tissue
Describe the movement of a fibrous joint.
Fibrous joints do not allow any movement
Give an example of a fibrous joint.
Bones of the skull in adults
What are cartilaginous joints?
Cartilaginous joints are bones that are united by cartilage
Describe the movement of cartilaginous joints.
Cartilaginous joints allow limited movement
Give an example of a cartilaginous joint.
IV discs and pubic symphysis
What are synovial joints?
Synovial joints are bones that are separated by a cavity that contains synovial fluid and are united by a fibrous capsule.
What is the fibrous capsule that united the bones of a synovial joint lined with?
The fibrous capsule that unites the bones of a synovial joint is lined with synovial membrane (vascular connective tissue with capillary networks and lymphatics)
What type of cells does the synovial membrane contain and what do these produce?
The synovial membrane contains synovial cells (fibroblasts) that produce synovial fluid.
What are the articular surfaces of the bones of synovial joints covered with?
The articular surfaces of the bones of synovial joints are covered with cartilage.
Describe a simple synovial joint.
A simple synovial joint has 1 pair of articular surfaces
Describe a compound synovial joint.
A compound synovial joint has more than 1 pair of articular surfaces
What is the function of synovial fluid?
-lubricate the joint to facilitate joint movements (reduces friction)
-aids the nutrition of the articular cartilage
