MSK 9 Flashcards
What happens to the muscles, when the nerves get injured?
the muscles cannot receive sensory signals and will first produce numbness and paralysis and then will result in flaccid paralysis
what does flaccid paralysis mean?
when the muscle cannot contract and results in becoming floppy and immobile
where does the musculocutaneous nerve originate from?
the terminal branch of the lateral cord
what are the motor functions of the musculocutaneous nerve?
motor to anterior arm:
- coracobrachialis
- biceps
- brachialis
what are the sensory functions of the musculocutaneous nerve?
skin of anterolateral forearm
what muscle does the musculocutaneous nerve travel through?
coracobrachialis muscle
where is the most likely site of injury for the musculocutaneous nerve
when it travels through the coracobrachialis muscle belly
what is the name of the musculocutaneous nerve once it passes the cubital fossa
lateral cutaneous nerve of forearm
where does the axillary nerve originate from?
the terminal branch of the posterior cord
what is the motor function of the axillary nerve?
motor to lateral shoulder:
- deltoid
- teres minor
what is the sensory function of the axillary nerve?
sensory to:
- skin to lateral shoulder
the axillary nerve travels through where?
the quadrangular axillary space and wraps around the posterior aspect of the humeral neck
where is the most likely site of injury for the axillary nerve?
when it travels around the surgical neck of the humerus
where does the radial nerve originate from?
the terminal branch of the posterior cord
what are the motor functions of the radial nerve
motor to:
- extensor muscles of posterior arm
- extensor muscles of posterior forearm
- brachioradialis
- supinator muscle
what are the sensory functions of the radial nerve?
sensory to:
- skin of posterior arm, forearm, and hand
- dorsal surface of digits 1,2,3 and lateral 1/2 of digit 4
where does the radial nerve travel?
travels posteriorly, inferior to the quadrangular axillary space and wraps around the posterior aspect of humeral shaft
where is the most likely site of injury of the radial nerve
the radial groove of humerus
the radial nerve turn into ?
the posterior cutaneous nerve of forearm and lower lateral cutaneous nerve of arm
