Q

Are pelvic fractures dangerous?

A

Yes! Very dangerous, partially because of blood loss - several litres of blood can pool in the pelvis, and this may result in shock, the source of which may not be noticed in time.
75% of motor vehicle deaths are due to pelvic fracture!

Q

What is an open book fracture of the pelvis?

A

Usually caused by anterio-posterior trauma.
The pubic symphysis is compromised and the rest of the pelvis flips open like a book.
In rare cases, instead of the public symphysis being disrupted, the pubic rami are fractured vertically, in which case there may also be sacro-iliac joint dysfunction.
