MSK Flashcards
What are the constituents and functions of the axial skeleton?
- Skull, vertebral column and rib cage
- Protection and support
List the functions of the skeleton/bones
Mechanical - Support, protection, shape, movement
Physiological - haemopoiesis, mineral storage, lipid storage
What are the constituents and functions of the appendicular skeleton?
- Upper and lower limbs
- Mobility
List the 5 types of bone
Long, short, flat, sesamoid, irregular
What is a tuberosity?
Roughened, rounded elevation
What is a tubercule?
Small elevation
What is a spine?
Slender projection
What is a trochanter?
Large projection of femur
What is a condyle?
Large prominence/rounded surface
What is an epicondyle?
Smaller prominence above a condyle
What is a facet?
Flattened surface for joint/muscle attachment
What is a crest?
Ridge
What is a sinus?
Hollow space
What is a meatus?
Tunnel/canal
What is a fossa?
Depression
What is a foramen?
Hole/opening
What is a fissure?
Cleft/narrow slit
What is a notch?
Large groove
What is a joint?
An articulation between two or more bones
Describe the composition of a fibrous joint and give examples
Connected by dense connective tissue, with no joint cavity.
Fixed and immovable
What is the difference between primary and secondary cartilaginous joints?
Primary are synchondroses, connected by hyaline cartilage e.g. epiphyseal growth plates
Secondary are symphyses connected by fibrocartilage and hyaline e.g. pubic symphysis, intervertebral discs
Describe the general structure of a synovial joint
- Articular capsule (synovial memb) around joint
- Synovial fluid
- Articular hyaline cartilage
What movements does a hinge joint allow?
Flexion and extension
What is a saddle joint?
Concave and convex joint surfaces
What is the structure of a plane joint and what movements does it allow?
Bony process fits into bony ligamentous socket
Rotation
What movements does a condyloid joint allow?
Flexion, extension, adduction, abduction and circumduction
What is the structure of a ball + socket joint and what movement does it allow?
Rounded head fits into concavity
Movement in several axes
What factors does joint stability depend on?
- Articular surface
- Ligaments
- Muscles
