MSI - Slides 29-56 Flashcards
Tennis elbow is what type of epicondylitis?
lateral
“a condition that results in deterioration of the tendon fibers that attach to the bone at the outside of the elbow”
lateral epicondylitis
what are the signs and symptoms of lateral epicondylitis?
pain occurring where the tendons of the forearm muscles attach to the elbow bone at the lateral epicondyles
risk factors for lateral epicondylitis?
- repeated use of the forearm muscles
- chronic stress to the forearm muscles, especially the ECRB (eg. screw driving, hammering, painting, using a keyboard with hand in extension)
Overuse of flexor/ pronator groups = ____ epicondylitis
Overuse of extensor/ supinator groups = ____ epicondylitis
medial
lateral
tommy johns surgery is to fix what side of the elbow?
medial
“an overuse injury affecting the flexor-pronator muscle origin at the anterior medial epicondyle of the humerus”
medial epicondylitis
What is the most common cause of medial elbow pain?
medial epicondylitis
What are risk factors for medial epicondylitis?
- Repetitive use of flexor-pronator muscles, especially with stress at the medial epicondyle
- Screwdriver or hammer work, excessive grip tension
“inflammation of the fluid filled sheath (synovium) that surrounds a tendon”
tenosynovitis
What would the following symptoms indicate:
- swelling
- pain
- loss of motion
- loss of strength
tenosynovitis
What is it called when the tendons in the thumb and fingers do not glide smoothly?
trigger finger/trigger thumb
What is trigger finger caused by?
a groove or nodule on the flexing tendon of the finger or thumb
With trigger finger, does flexion or extension cause more problems?
usually get stuck when coming into extension
Risk factors for trigger finger?
- more common in women
- age (40-60 years)
- can be born with nodule on tendon
- repetitive gripping can cause tendons to become irritated
- associated with using tools that have handles with hard or sharp edges
