MS and NMR Flashcards
Mass spectrometer
ionize sample with an ion source, ions separated by m/z ratio, ion current recorded, spectrum is plot of ion current versus m/z
Isotopomers
Have the same chemical composition but different isotope compositions; give distinctive isotope patterns
Fragmentations
hard ionization technique (gaseous sample —> e- beam —> molecular ion (M+)
Nuclei to study
nuclei with a nuclear magnetic moment, non zero spin quantum number
Chemical equivalence
nuclei have the same chemical environment; are symmetrically equivalent
Magnetic equivalence
nuclei have the same chemical environment PLUS they couple equally to each other magnetic nucleus in the sample.
Number of lines in NMR
2nI+1
