- CNS inflammatory disease of white matter disseminated over space and time
- Demyelination
MC form of MS
Relapsing remitting
Demographics of MS patients
- Onset at 15-45 yo
- 70% females
- More Northern hemisphere
Describe relapsing-remitting MS
Episodes of acute worsening with recovery and a stable course b/w relapses
Clinical presentation of MS
- Earliest signs are a young person tripping over curbs or sidewalks
- Heaviness or numbness of both legs

How to diagnose MS?
- 2010 McDonald Criteria
- MRI (gold)
What is required to diagnose MS?
At least 2 attacks (new s/s lasting for at least 24 hrs)
Treatment of MS
- IV steroids (anti-inflamm)
- Immunomodulating or suppressing drugs
- Symptomatic treatment
Management of MS relapse
High dose steroids
What kind of disease is Guillain-Barre syndrome?
Immune-mediated neuroapthy
Clinical presentation of GBS?
- Rapid, areflexic, ascending motor paralysis
- With or w/o sensory component
- Lower CNs often involved
Etiology of GBS?
70% occur after an acute infectious process (Campylobacter, CMV, mycoplasma)
What is required to diagnose GBS?
- Progressive weakness
2. Generalized hypo or areflexia
Treatment of GBS
High dose IVIG or plasmapheresis
