MRSA (Methicillin-Resistant Stap Aureus) Flashcards
What is MRSA?
It is a staphylococcal infection that is resistant to certain antibiotics.
These infections range from minor skin rashes to abscesses to serious, complicated, life-threatening infections
How is MRSA transmitted?
Transmission occurs through direct person-to-person contact, respiratory droplets, blood, or sharing personal items, such as hair brushes, towels, and sports equipment, and touching surfaces or items contaminated with MRSA
What are the s/s?
- bumps
- skin area that is red, swollen, painful, and warm to touch
- fever
- fluctuance (pus)
- purulent drainage
- necrotic areas may appear
What are the diagnostics tests performed to confirm MRSA?
- cultures
- incision and drainage (I&D)
- aspiration of the abscess
- culturing the fluid or tissue.
What is the nursing management/treatment?
Interventions:
- Educate the family on the importance of taking the antibiotics as directed and finishing all the medicine.
- Emphasize that this will help slow the creation of antimicrobial-resistant organisms.
- Teach the child and parents proper hand hygiene and handwashing.
- Discourage family members from sharing personal items.
- Explain the risk factors involved in transmission.
- Explain the importance of keeping cuts and scrapes cleaned and covered.
- Review the signs of MRSA and emphasize the importance of early recognition and treatment.
- wound care, which may include I&D
Tx:
- antibiotics w/ microbial susceptibility
