“Browsing for the right sky”
Personification of the train. Has connotations of taking your time. Suggests the train and also the poet are both unsure of where they are going.
“I say her phrases to myself”
Duffy sits on the train thinking about her mother and memories with her.
“He sought approval without words”
Photographer remembers memory of war victim and trying to ask the wife for approval for a photo. This memory has a big impact on him.
“Spools of suffering set out in ordered rows”
Photographer has photos of war set out, ready to be developed. These photos preserve his memory and so the horrific experiences and memories of these victims doesn’t fade over time as he is constantly reminded through his images.
