Mrs birling has strong views about appropriate conversation topics
She scolds mr birling many times for what she thinks are inappropriate topics
She wants to impress gerald with an upper class facade
“Go look for the father of the child, its his responsibility”
As soon as she finds out eva was pregnant, she shifts all blame to the father
As she describes this man, there is clear dramatic irony
The audience wait for her to slowly realise she is talking about her son
This shows she is a hypocrite
“She had only herself to blame.”
Mrs birling constantly says eva smith is responsible for her death, even though she denied her any help
She lacks empathy as she doesnt care that eva smith is dead, and even blames her and eric.
“I was the only one who didn’t give in”
Refuses to accept blame
Mrs birling views it as a victory that she was unwilling to take responsibility
She appears smug in this statement as she mocks the others for answering the inspectors questions truthfully
This emphasises her uncaring and selfish nature.
