Mrs belongs language is quite abrupt and dismissive
“That class”
“that sort”
“that type”
She believes she’s morally and socially superior to them and she represents social snobbery and hypocrisy
After her pretence is revealed Mrs Birling stage description changes and she becomes distressed
“Grandly” “triumphantly”
“Rather coward” “distressed” “alarmed”
Her speech become more fragmented suggesting her self-confidence and complacency is breaking down.
“I’ve done nothing wrong-and you know it”
This contrast to her speech at the start of the play and the dashes can represent the breakdown in their relationship
“He certainly didn’t make me confess-I had done no more than my duty”
How does Mrs Birling react to realising Eric was the father
Mrs Birling stated “go look for the father of the child. It’s his responsibility”
“He’s compelled to confess in public his responsibility”
Mrs Birling realised that she’s helped to kill her only grand child and it’s only when she realised this does she begin to show sign of weakness “(staggered) it isn’t true”
