Mr Utterson Flashcards

Chapter 1 Quotes

1
Q

“Long, dusty, dreary and yet somehow loveable”

A

Despite his appearance, he’s a man that’s popular amongst citizens, he has a high reputation which already shows us since the time period is Victorian that he’s unlikely to do anything that would ruin his reputation in public, so should he lose his cool it would be considered an important key moment in the play. He isn’t blessed in the looks department but people still like this man, perhaps due to his admirable work ethic or serious personality.

” He was

austere with himself”

A

Austere means to deny yourself of luxuries and to be strict with yourself this once again reflects Utterson’s professional nature.

Q

“and though he enjoyed the theater, had not

crossed the doors of one for twenty years.”

A

The reasoning would be that theatres were seen as a lower class luxury, so a middle-high class lawyer seen in here would be seen as unacceptable and demote his reputation’s status

Q

“drank gin when he was alone, to mortify a

taste for vintages; “

A

Gin was Utterson’s favoured beverage, yet he was unable to drink it in public as it was a lower class drink, instead he’d have to please people by drinking what he’d see as personally disgusting.

Q

” It was a nut to crack for many, what
these two could see in each other, or what subject they could find
in common. “

A

The friendship between Richard Enfield and Utterson was odd to many since their personalities were supposedly opposites Enfield is not remotely phased by the absurd yet Utterson is, though they do have common traits such as good mannerisms and morals.
Enfield usually only appears to provide information such as the story of the door.

Q

“I shake hands on that,

Richard.”

A

Utterson agrees to never refer to the door with Enfield again, the fact he uses his first name reinforces the idea that they’re close friends as titles in Jekyll and Hyde meant everything.
