When the defendant’s goal or aim to engage in particular conduct and cause a certain result
Purposely
When the defendant is virtually or “practically certain” that his conduct will tend to cause a particular result
Knowingly
When the defendant realizes that there is a “substantial and unjustifiable” risk that his conduct will cause harm but consciously disregard it
Recklessly
When the defendant is unaware of and takes a risk that an ordinary person would not take
Negligently
Defendant admits they are responsible for their act but claim that, under the circumstances, what they did was right (Self-defense, consent, choice of evils)
Justification Defense
Defendants admit what they did was wrong, but claim that, under the circumstances, they were not responsible for what they did (Insanity, duress, entrapment)
Excuse Defense
