Moving Cellular Materials Flashcards
Cell membrane
Controls why goes in and out of a cell selectively permeable
Maintains balance between the cell and the environment
Like a window screen
Passive transport
The movement of substances through a cell membrane without the use of energy
There are three types
Diffusion
When molecules move away from areas where there are MORE of them into areas where there are FEWER of them move from high to low concentration
Equilibrium
Number of molecules becomes equal in both areas and diffusion stops
Example lungs
Osmosis
The diffusion if WATER through a cell membrane
Why do u think salty gods make you thirsty
Facilitated diffusion
Substances move in and out of a cell with the help of transport proteins
Happens because some molecules are just too big and need help
Ex glucose
Active transport
When ENERGY is required to move substances in and out ifs cell
Ex root cells need minerals from the soil even though there’s more minerals in the cell than in the soil
Endocytosis
A substance is taken into a cell by surrounding it with the cell membrane forming a sphere called a VESICLE
Phagocytosis cell eating
Pinocytosis cell drinking the drop engulfed is relatively small
Exocytosis
The membrane of the VESICLE fuses with the cells membrane and the vesicles contents are released outside of the cell
Permeable
Allowing liquids or gases to go through
