Proprietary Systems
- Had ownership of land and resources in the Caribbean.
- Methods used by Britain to colonize the Caribbean

Representative Systems
Consisted of the plantocracy - rich group of white planters that made up the oligarchy.
-Absentee planters had power in the British parliament West Indian Lobby
Crown Colony Government
As the sugar industry declined, the Crown Colonies were implemented to have direct ownership (rule) of the colonies.
-First Crown Colony was Jamaica.
-Barbados rejected the Crown Colony government.
Note: Trinidad, St. Lucia and Guyana were always Crown Colonies.
Factors that Led to Revolution
-Failing political systems
-Oppression of the masses
-Ideology (having a problem, then finding a solution)
-Leadership
-Military Support
IMP. If a political system is failing, this can lead to revolution.
Early 1900s
-Crown colony governments were failing to meet the needs of the people, and social and political situations worsened.
-World War 1 led to a fall in exports to Europe.
-Domestic Inflation
-Lowering of wages
-Unemployment
Increasing population
-Poverty
-Increased resentment for the white ruling class
-Need for social and political reform
-Lack of adequate health services
-Lack of access to affordable land
-Political exclusion
-Lack of relevant and adequate educational services
-Failure of the government to adopt policies to improve social conditions.
Effects of the World Wars
Internationalization - spreading of ideas across international borders.
Nationalism
Democracy
-As Britain was fighting for itself during these World Wars, the Caribbean began forming its own identity of Nationalism and democracy.
Great Depression
The sudden decline of the American economy impacted many because many countries depended on the USA.
Stages of Independence
1930s Labour Riots
1940s Extension of the Electorate; Universal Adult Suffrage and Proposal for Federation (1947).
1950s Increased in the elected element to Legislature; Internal Self Government and Implementation of Federation (power to Caribbean people to have these elected to address and implement laws to serve our interest)
Elections were called; local parties were going head-to-head with British parties (In 1958, Federation was implemented)
Handling Internal Affair - however they had restriction on some legislation.
