What is an Archipelago?
Archipelago is a chain of islands that is usually closely related at a subterranean level.
Define the Caribbean geographically.
The Caribbean is in the region which that the central identifying feature is the Caribbean Sea, rimmed by islands and mainland territories from Central and South America.
Define the Caribbean geologically.
The Caribbean is a region where its territories lie on the Caribbean Plate, this region experiences similar tectonic, seismic and volcanic activities (earthquake and volcanic) and share similar geological features (mountains,volcanoes, types
of rocks- mainly metaphoricigneous)
Define the Caribbean historically.
The Caribbean is a region in which all territory experience similar historical process and continue to experience the impact of
these historical processes:
1. European colonization
2. Plantation society/system
3. African slavery
4. System of indentureship
The Caribbean is still affected through forms of
underdevelopment and racism.
Define the Caribbean politically.
The Caribbean is a region in which the territories are at different stages at achieving political
autonomy or decolonization from European colonizers, some territories are
Independent, Associates States or Dependencies.
Define the Caribbean disaphoircally.
The Caribbean is a region of market diversity, there is much that is common to all terrorities; that it was formed by many people who migrated to
the Caribbean from their homeland and settled. (First Diaspora). This includes Caribbean people
who have migrated abroad and settled abroad (Second Diaspora)
Main Definition of the Caribbean
The Caribbean is a region that has many groups of people which have different backgrounds; they may share
similar experiences as to how many were to settle here by European powers but the Caribbean as a place has
exceeded its physical restraint, rimmed by the Caribbean Sea through the means of diversification
(cultural, agricultural and settlement patterns).
Sub-Regions of the Caribbean
The Caribbean is divided into four sub-regions.
1. The Lesser Antilles - which is made up of the three smaller island groups: the Windward Islands, the Leeward Islands and the Lesser Antilles. The Lesser Antilles is a double arc of islands that stretch from the Virgin Islands to Trinidad
2. The Greater Antilles - refers to the four largest islands in the Caribbean: Cuba, Hispaniola (Haiti and Dominican Republic), Jamaica and Puerto RIco
3. The Mainland Territories - includes Belieze, Suriname, Guyana and French Guiana
4. Other Territories - includes the Cayman Islands, The Bahamas and Turks and Caicos Islands
