Movements & Joints III - Elbow Joints Flashcards

1
Q

anular ligament of radius

A

Location:
Forearm (superior lateral)
Description:
Encases head of radius on anterior, lateral, and posterior aspects
Anchored anteriorly and posteriorly to ulna
Function:
Maintains contact of head of radius with radial notch of ulna
Permits rotation of radius for pronation and supination of forearm

Q

fibrous capsule of elbow joint

A

Location:
Elbow
Description:
Broad, thin, fibrous layer of joint capsule
Attached to distal humerus, proximal ulna, and anular ligament (of radius)
Function:
Encloses elbow joint
Comment:
Lined internally by synovial membrane (which secretes and absorbs synovial fluid)

Q

humerus

A
Location:
Arm
Description:
Long bone
Characteristic features include head, neck, greater and lesser tubercles, shaft, medial and lateral epicondyles, capitulum, and trochlea
Comment:
Largest bone of upper limb

Q

radial collateral ligament

A
Location:
Elbow joint (lateral)
Between lateral epicondyle of humerus and anular ligament of radius and superior ulna
Description:
Broad, triangular ligamentous band
Function:
Reinforces fibrous capsule of elbow joint
Stabilizes elbow joint

Q

radius

A

Location:
Forearm (lateral)
Description:
Long, thin bone
Articulates proximally with capitulum of humerus and ulna
Articulates distally with ulna and carpal bones (scaphoid and lunate)
Characteristic features include head, neck, tuberosity, shaft, and styloid process

Q

tendon of biceps brachii m.

A
Action:
Supination of forearm
Flexion of forearm
Flexion of arm (weak)
Origin:
Long head: scapula (supraglenoid tubercle)
Short head: scapula (coracoid process)
Insertion:
Tendon: radius (tuberosity)
Aponeurosis: deep fascia (proximal medial forearm)
Innervation:
Musculocutaneous nerve

Q

ulna

A

Location:
Forearm (medial)
Description:
Long, thin bone
Articulates proximally with trochlea of humerus and radius
Articulates distally with radius and carpal bones (lunate and triquetrum)
Characteristic features include olecranon, trochlear notch, tuberosity, shaft, and styloid process
Comment:
Fibrocartilage separates distal end from carpal bones

Q

ulnar collateral ligament

A
Location:
Elbow joint (medial)
Between medial epicondyle of humerus and ulna (coronoid process and olecranon)
Description:
Broad, triangular ligamentous band
Function:
Reinforces fibrous capsule of elbow joint
Stabilizes elbow joint

Q

oblique cord

A

Location:
Proximal radius and ulna
Description:
Small, flattened ligament that connects proximal radius and ulna
Runs from lateral side of ulnar tuberosity to just inferior to radial tuberosity

Q

olecranon

A

Location:
Elbow (posterior)
Description:
Prominent, subcutaneous, bony protuberance of proximal ulna
Comment:
Provides attachment for triceps brachii muscle
Considered the “point” of the elbow
