flexion (flex)
Movement which decreases the angle between two bones
extension (ext)
Movement which increases the angle between two bones
abduction
Movement of the bone away from the midline, either in the horizontal or vertical plane
adduction
Movement of the bone towards the midline, either in the vertical or horizontal plane
circumduction
Movement of the bone so that the end describes a circle while the bone makes a cone shape
rotation
Movement of a bone around a central axis
supination
Movement of the forearm bones to have radius and ulna parallel
pronation
Movement of the radius and ulna so that they are crossed over
eversion
Movement of the sole of the foot outward at the ankle
inversion
Movement of the sole of the foot inward at the ankle
dorsiflexion
Decreasing the angle between the metatarsals and the tibia
plantarflexion
Increasing the angle between the metatarsals and the tibia
depression
A movement where the scapula moves in inferior or downward direction
elevation
A movement where the scapula moves in a superior or upward direction occurring at the sterno clavicular joints
active movement
involves the voluntary contraction of muscles to produce movement
passive movement
occurs when an external force moves a body part without any effort from the individual
resistant movement
involves working against an opposing force to strengthen muscles
