Movement Of Substances Into Or Out Of Cells Flashcards
1
Q
What is diffusion?
A
The net movement of particles from a region of higher concentration to lower concentration as a result of random movement
2
Q
Purpose of diffusion
A
Helps living organisms to obtain many of their requirements, get rid of many waste products, and carry out gas exchange for respiration
3
Q
Factors affecting rate of diffusion
A
- shorter distance
- higher temperature
- higher concentration gradient
4
Q
What is osmosis?
A
The diffusion of water molecules from region of high water potential to lower water potential through a partially permeable membrane
5
Q
What are the three types of osmosis?
A
Hypertonic, isotonic, hypertonic
6
Q
What is hypotonic osmosis and what does it do?
A
- more water than solute (dilute)
- water enters the cell
- causes animal cell to swell and burst
- causes plant cell to be turgid
7
Q
What is isotonic osmosis and what does it do?
A
- salt solution (50/50)
- animal cell and plant cell has same amount of water entering and leaving the cell
8
Q
What is hypertonic osmosis and what does it do?
A
- more solute than water (concentrated)
- water leaves the cell
- causes animal cell to shrivel and shrink
- causes plant cell to be flaccid then plasmolysed
