Movement of substances Flashcards
diffusion
the passive net movement of molecules for an area of high concentration to low concentration. small, non polar molecules like oxygen and carbon dioxide can diffuse through a membrane between phosphlipid molecules
osmosis
the passive, net movement of free water molecules across a partially permeable membrane from high water concentrations to low against a solute concentration gradient
facilitated diffusion
the passive, net movement of molecules across a membrane from high to low concentration through a protein channel which is specific to the larger, non polar molecule like glucose of amino acids
active transport
the active movement of molecules across a membrane from a lower concentration to high through a specific protein carrier. larger or polar molecules can pass through a membrane this way
endo and exocytosis
active movement of larger molecules like proteins
