Movement of Substances Flashcards
Where is the smell of spray strongest at
It is stronger near the source
How does the concentration of spray molecules change during diffusion
The concentration of spray molecules changes from being high concentrated near the source to being evenly spread throughout the container
What is diffusion
Diffusion is the net movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration until equilibrium is reached
What is osmosis
Osmosis is the net movement of water particles across a semi-permeable membrane from a solution with high water potential to one of low water potential
What is the difference between osmosis and diffusion
The difference between diffusion and osmosis is that osmosis only involves the movement of water particles
What is concentration
Concentration is the abundance of a substance in the total volume of the solution
What is a dilute solution
A dilute solution is one that has a little amount of solute in the solution
What is a concentrated solution
A concentrated solution one that has a lot of solute in the solution
Where does osmosis occur and why
Osmosis occurs across a semi-permeable membrane, as it has tiny holes that allow only small particles like water particles to pass through
What is a turgid cell
A turgid cell is one that has just taken water in and is swollen. This is because the stream of water entering the cell causes it to swell
What is a flaccid cell
A flaccid cell occurs when water is leaving the cell, making the plant appear wilted
What is the difference between a plant cell and an animal cell
The difference between them is that animal cells are not surrounded by a cellulose cell, allowing them to expand further than plant cells. Therefore animal cells can expand until they burst
