Movement of Fluids Flashcards
Hypertonic
Have a higher osmolality than the body fluids
3% NaCl
Hypotonic
Lower osmolality
0.45% NaCl
Osmolality
The concentration of dilutes in body fluids determined by the total solute concentration w/in a fluid compartment
Osmosis
Primary mode of movement
Water moving from less to high concentrated area
Diffusion
Intermingling of molecules (solid, liquid, gas)
High—> low concentration
Equalizer
Filtration
Movement of water & particles
High —> Low pressure
Movement between vascular compartment and interstitial fluid
Filtration terms
Hydrostatic pressure: the pressure a fluid exerts w/in a closed system on the walls of its container
Osmotic pressure
The power of a solution to draw water across a semi permeable membrane
Active transport
Used to maintain Na+ ⬆️ in ECF, K+ ⬆️ in ICF. Moves Na+ from cells, and K+ into cells
Lower —> higher concentration
Must have ATP to occur
Na+ K+ pump
Isotonic
Has the same osmolality as body fluids 0.9% NaCl (saline)
