movement inside the cell Flashcards
1
what does one gene of the amino sequence code for
one polypeptide
2
what does the ribosome do
synthesises the polypeptide
1
describe stage one of protein production
the nucleus contains DNA, inside the nucleus an mRNA copy of the DNA is made. The mRNA leaves the nucleus via a nuclear pore and attaches to a ribosome on the RER in the cytoplasm
describe stage two of protein production
the ribosomes synthesise the polypeptide
describe stage three of protein production
the RER then transports the protein through the cell within its cisternae
describe stage four of protein production
at the end of the RER the protein is packaged into a transport vesicle- it is pinched of the RER then moves towards and fuses with the golgi body
describe stage five of protein production
the golgi body chemically modifies the protein- could produce glycoproteins (adding carbohydrates to the protein) or lysosomes
describe stage six of protein production
the modified protein is packaged off into a secretory vesicle - moves towards and fuses with the plasma membrane of the cell- protein is secreted from the cell by exocytosis- requires ATP that is synthesised by the mitochondria by aerobic respiration
