Extension
Increasing the angle between two joints
example; straightening the arm
Flexion
Decreasing the angle between two joints
example; bending the arm
Supination
Rotating the forearm so the palm faces upward.
Pronation
Rotating the forearm so the palm faces downward.
Adduction
Moving towards the medial plane of the body.
example; moving your leg inward or bringing your fingers together.
Abduction
Moving away from the medial plane of the body.
example; raising the leg or arm to the side.
Retraction
Moving backward along a plane.
example; moving the arms backward.
Protraction
Moving forward along a plane.
example; extending the arms.
Elevation
The upward movement of part of the body.
example; raising the shoulders.
Depression
The downward movement of part of the body.
example; lowering the shoulders or the jaw.
Lateral rotation
Turning outward away from the medial plane
example; turning the leg away from the hip.
Medial rotation
Turning inward towards the medial plane.
example; turning the leg towards the hip.
Circumduction
Circular motion created by a combination of flexion, extension, abduction, adduction, medial, and lateral movement.
Opposition
Bringing the tips of the thumbs and fingers together.
