Anatomical position terms Flashcards
Frontal (coronal) plane
This plane devides the body into front and back portions.
Horizontal (transverse) plane
This is a horizontal plane that runs perpendicular to both the frontal and the median planes.
Median (midsagittal) plane
This plane divides the body into equal right and left halves.
Posterior (dorsal)
Towards the back
Anterior (ventral)
Towards the front.
Superior (cranial)
Towards the head.
Inferior (caudal)
Towards the feet.
Promixal
Near the trunk.
Distal
Away from the trunk.
Medial
Towards the median plane (near the middle of the body).
Lateral
Away from the median plane (away from the middle of the body).
Anatomical center
The point of the body where the frontal, horizontal, and median planes meet so that parts of the body can be referred to as anterior or posterior, or superior or inferior of this point.
