Mountains Flashcards
Q
Describe how fault-block mountains form. Give one example.
A
Fault Block Mountains form when tension causes large blocks of the Earth’s crust to drop down relative to other blocks.
Ex: Tetons
Q
Describe how volcanic mountains are formed. Give one example.
A
Volcanic mountains form at Subduction zones
Ex: Mount. St. Helens
Q
What is an earthquake?
A
An earthquake is the shaking of the earth when two tectonic plates collide.
Q
What tool and scale is used to measure earthquakes?
A
Tool: Seismograph
Scale: Richter Scale
Q
How are p and s waves similar and different?
A
P-waves and S-waves are both waves that move through Earth’s interior. P-waves are pressure waves. They are the fastest seismic waves. S-waves are shear waves. They are the second-fastest seismic waves. Unlike P-waves, S-waves cannot travel through parts of the Earth that are completely liquid.
Q
Describe how folded mountains form. Give one example.
A
Folded mountains form when rock layers are squeezed together and pushed upward.
Ex: Appalachian mountains
