Present Active Indicative Verb (connecting vowel included)
1 sg - ω
2 sg - εις
3 sg - ει

3 persons and their greek words
first person - the person speaking (ἐγώ, ἡμεῖς)
second person - the person spoken to (σύ, ὑμεῖς)
third person - the person/thing spoken about (αὑτός, λόγοι)
Tense vs. Time
Tense: the form of the greek verb (past, present, future)
Time: when the action of the verb occurs
Perfective aspect
the action of the verb is thought of as a simple event (“I ate”, “they studied”). Known as undefined action
Imperfective aspect
the action of the verb is thought of as an ongoing process (“I am eating”, “they were studying”). Known as continuous action
2 types of voices
- Active (“I eat”)
- Passive (“I am being eaten”)
differentiated by two sets of personal endings
Indicative mood
mood used when verb makes statements and most questions
Root
Most basic form of a word
verbal root - active
Stem
the form of the root that is used in a particular tense (when you remove connecting vowel and personal ending)
Connecting Vowel
connects step and personal ending
- in indicative mood, if personal ending begins with υ or ν, the connecting vowel is ο.
- otherwise, it is ε
- if no personal ending, it can be either ο or ε
Personal Endings
suffixes added after the connecting vowel that indicate person and number
Lexical form for verbs
first person singular, present indicatve
Present Active Indicative action and time
action: continuous (imperfective) action
time: generally present time
