The enclosed area, usually on a smaller mound of earth than the keep. Soldiers and animals live here.
The Bailey
This was a tower built on top of the Motte as a lookout. It was the safest part of the castle.
The Keep
This is the deep ditch surrounding the whole castle. Sometimes it was filled with water which made it harder for enemies to reach the castle walls.
The Moat
This connected the keep to the bailey. Defenders sashed it if they had to retreat to the keep.
The Wooden Bridge
This was a small hill made by digging a large circular ditch and throwing soils into the centre.
The Motte
This was a defensive barrier made of wood surrounding the Bailey.
