What sort of castles did William build after the Motte and Bailey castles.
Stone Castles
Batter Base
Sloped walls at the bottom of the castle.
Well
Water supply inside the castle. A Well was very important in a Norman castle as it provided drinking water for the Lord and his men. Also if there was a Siege hen they would have a a supply if water in the castle.
Drawbridge
Defence for a castle entrance
Moat/ditch
This was dug around the castle to make it harder for enemies to access.
Slit windows.
Too narrow to fire if climb into. Also had slanted walls so that even if an archer managed to get an arrow through the window then the defender could easily move aside and hide behind the wall.
Spiral staircase
This disadvantaged right handed attackers and tired them out so that the defender at the top of the staircase could easily cut them down.
Elevated Entrance
This meant that it would take longer for an attackers to break into the castle.
Battlements
This provide protection and height for archers and the guards on duty.
The Porcullis
A metal gate that could trap attackers or stop them getting into the castle.
The Trip Step
One step was steeper than the others to cause an attacker to trip up.
Thick Walls
These made it impossible for a Battering Ram to enter a castle.
