Q

what are the strengths of the motte and bailey

A
  • it is easy to build because it is mkstly earth and wood (they could build it in less than a week and they also have alot of soldiers to build them
  • they are easy to defend because the normans were an invading army. they also had a big motte/hill and on the top they could see intruders from a distance away and would have archers to shoot them
  • it could easily be modified. so they could ulgrade it from wood to stone. stone is better as it isnt flammable like wood. this development did happen later

Q

what are the weaknesses of the motte and bailey

A
  • wood is flammable! if the english would put a fire next to the wood, it wood burn
  • wood can be easily damaged by axes and sharp weapons, this isnt good as the english would normally be carrying axes/ swords.
  • the wood can get wet and then it can rot. this isnt good as it would rain alot in england
