Motors Flashcards

Q
How does an induction motor work
A
An induction motor has no commutators or brushes which help with longevity. There are windings in the stator and in the rotor. The windings in the stator create a magnetic field which induces a current in the windings in the rotor.
The advantages: Robust Can be used at high speeds without causing damage Runs of grid ac power Efficient use of power
Disadvantages
Older motors where only suitable for constant speed applications.
Modern motors with variable frequency drive are not.
