Motor Theory Flashcards
Types of practice conditions
Massed, distributed, constant, variable, blocked, random, part, and whole.
massed
practice time is greater than amount of time between trails (fatigue)
Distributed
rest time between trials equals or is greater than time in trial
Constant
performance of task in same way (may improve performance but fatiguing, less effect)
Variable
perform task in different way by varying characteristics of the task (improves ability to generalize to various situations)
Blocked
practicing each task in a block before progressing to a new task (better for cog. impair)
Random practice
practicing a series of tasks in a random order
Part practice
practicing a subset of task component
Whole practice
practicing the entire task
Acquisition
the initial learning of a new skill. Use frequent extrinsic and concurrent feedback, practice (physical, mental, repetition and consistency), need to do manual/verbal cueing.
Retention and Transfer of skills
long-term learning of skill and ability to generalize skill to new contexts. Use less frequent terminal feedback, promote entire pattern, encourage problem solving. Allow for error don’t over cue
Therapeutic considerations for motor learning
Therapeutic environment, arousal, attention, motivation, meaning, instruction, feedback and practice.
