Motor Nuclei in brainstem Flashcards
1
Q
Oculomotor nucleus
A
CN III
- superior colliculus
- lesion causes deficits in voluntary eye movement
*no corticobulbar (get from frontal eye field)
2
Q
Trochlear nucleus
A
CN IV
- inferior colliculus
- deficit in contralateral eye movement
- only nucleus that projects to contralateral side
- no corticobulbar (get from frontal eye field)
3
Q
Trigeminal motor nucleus
A
CN V
- middle pons
- deficits in mastication
- bilateral corticobulbar projections
4
Q
Abducens nucleus
A
CN VI
- caudal pons (fourth ventricle)
- deficit can’t abduct eye
*no corticobulbar (get from frontal eye field)
5
Q
Facial motor nucleus
A
- caudal pons
- deficit causes drooping of facial muscles
- contralateral corticobulbar projections for lower facial nucleus, bilateral for the rest
6
Q
Nucleus ambiguous
A
CN IX, X
- medulla
- deficit dysphagia, dysarthria
- bilateral corticobulbar projections
7
Q
Spinal accessory nucleus
A
CN XI
- cervical spine ventral horn
- shoulder drop, abduction problems
- bilateral corticobulbar projections
8
Q
Hypoglossal nucleus
A
CN XII
- medulla (fourth ventricle)
- one sided flaccid paralysis of tongue
- contralateral corticobulbar projections
*descending inputs arise from contralateral cortex
9
Q
Corticobulbar projections
A
- innervate SVE cell columns and the hypoglossal nucleus
- mediate voluntary movement
