Q

Oculomotor Nerve

A
  • motor to extraocular muscles and levator palpebrae superioris
  • preganglionic parasympathetic fibers to ciliary ganglion

H test
test efferent limb of pupillary light reflex

  • aneurism in circle of Willis may put pressure on it
  • increased ICP compresses against petrous temporal region (parasympathetics affected first)

Q

Facial Nerve (motor branch)

A

-muscles of facial expression (facial nucleus), stapedius muscle of inner ear

test efferent limb of corneal reflex (ipsilateral for direct, contralateral for consensual), sound sensitivity

*facial nerve can be injured during delivery at its exit from the stylomastoid foramen due to absence of styloid and mastoid processes

Q

Glossopharyngeal Nerve

A
  • sense from posterior 1/3 of tongue, nasopharynx, oropharynx, tympanic cavity and internal part of membrane, posterior soft palate, taste from posterior 1/3 of tongue (solitary nucleus), visceral sense from carotid body and sinus, uvula elevation (will deviate away from lesion)
  • preganglionic parasympathetics to otic ganglion to parotid gland (inferior salivatory nucleus)

test afferent limb of gag reflex (aff- solitary nucleus)
test carotid sinus (aff- solitary nucleus)
