Motor learning and coaching UNIT 3 Flashcards
what is the definition of transfer of learning ?
the effect that past experiences have on the learning of a new skill
what are the categories of transfer of learning ?
skill to skill
theory to practise
training to competition
what is the skill to skill?
occurs when a skill from one sport has an influence on a skill in another sport
what is theory to practise ?
the transfer of theoretical skills into practise
what is training to competition ?
the transfer of skills developed in training into a competition situation
what are the effects of learning ?
positive transfer of learning
negative transfer of learning
zero transfer of learning
what is positive transfer of learning ?
when the skill gained from the learning of a previous experience helps with the learning of a new skill
what is negative transfer of learning ?
occurs when the learning from a previously learned skill negatively impacts the learning of a new skill
what is a zero transfer of learning ?
occurs when the learning of a new skill is not affected either positively or negatively by previously learned skill
what are the coaching process?
- introduce the skill to be learned
- demonstrate and explain the skill
- practise the skill
- correct error/provide feedback
what is are the coaching processes?
-simple to complex
-shaping
-chaining
-static and dynamic
what is simple to complex?
a drill that begins easy then as the simple skill is mastered then the complexities are added until the whole skill can be performed at the speed and intensity required by competition
what is shaping ?
the process of simplifying a complex skill or using an incomplete version of the skill
what is chaining?
the breaking down into parts of a complex skill or activity and teaching the skill part by part
what is static to dynamic ?
a drill begins with the player being stationary to execute the skills and gradually adds in the movement required until performed at the speed and intensity required by competition
what are methods that increase optimal performance?
checklist
training log
coach feedback
video analysis
Questionnaire
what is a checklist ?
key points or key criteria on how the skill should be correctly executed
what is a training log ?
recording how they felt they went with their training and if certain session helped with performance
what is coach feedback?
outside person watches a performance and gives specific feedback on how to improve
what is video analysis?
recording the performance and showing it back to the athlete to point out the areas the athlete needs to improve
what are some benefits of video analysis?
-slow it down
-replay it
-compare
-shows progression over time
-different people can give feedback
what are questionnaires ?
a specific set of questions set by a coach for an athlete to complete post performance to evaluate and reflect what they performed well and what needs to be improved
draw the reflective learning process?
draw the qualitative analysis model?
what are the 5 parts of the Knudsen and Morrison model?
- Preparation
- Observation
- Evaluation
- Intervention
- Re-evaluation
what is preparation?
the coach is concerned with the process of developing a prerequisite knowledge normally make a checklist
what is observation ?
coach gather Information about the performance or movement
what is evaluation ?
using the information gathers in the observation the coach identifies the strengths and weaknesses
what is intervention ?
the coach provides feedback and correction to the athlete on what they can improve on
what is the autocratic leadership style?
the coach makes all of the decisions and is motivated complete the task as quickly and effectively as possible
don’t take into account the opinions of the group
what athlete does an autocratic style suit?
-effective when team is winning
-when individuals don’t know what they are doing
-good when safety is needed
-motivated extrinsically
-most effective when quick decisions are needed for large groups
-athletes that need very specific feedback on technique.
what is a democratic leadership style?
they consult the team as well as the coaching staff prior to the coach making the final decision
what are the characteristics of a democratic style?
-athletes are intrinsically motivated and want to contribute
-where enjoyment is important
- where athletes just need to refine skills by working together with a leader
what is a laissez-faire leadership style?
the coach has a hands off approach and let players decide whats best
