What were the motives and aims of Clemenceau?

A

Revenge on Germany for French suffering, avenging the French that died in the war.
Make Germany pay for the costs of the damage which would have been over 6 billion pounds which would have taken years to pay back.
Punish Germany for the humiliation they inflicted on France after their defeat in 1871.
Ensuring that Germany would never be able to attack France again, take away German land, weaken their industries and reduce armed forces.

What were the motives and aims of Lloyd-George?

A

Wanted was to end the threat of Germany to the British Empire and Navy
Making Germany a non-aggressive/peaceful country with no colonies.
While preventing Germany from becoming too weak to damage trade and the European industry revival, British trade, since Germany is their second-biggest trading partner.
Prevent Germany from becoming poor and communist,
as well as preventing Germany from humiliation so they want revenge.
Secure France against Germany, but avoid France getting too powerful and creating an uneven balance of power.

A

Don’t be too harsh on Germany.
He believed that they would build up resentment and want to start another war, as well as communist groups.
Strengthen democracy in defeated countries.
Give self-determination to small countries which once had been part of European empires.
He wanted different people of Eastern Europe to rule themselves rather than to be part of an Empire.
International cooperation
He believed that nations would cooperate to achieve world peace and that this would be achieved through the League of Nations, with Wilson’s most important of the 14 points.

What was Lloyd-George’s motive for not wanting Germany destroyed?

A

He wanted Britain and Germany to trade again, before the war Germany had been Britain’s second-largest trading partner. Trade with Germany meant that there were jobs for British people as much as they don’t like it.
