Introduction:
Several milestones in my life which have solidified my passions and I believe these very much align with the missions of the Police.

Grandad:
Perhaps the most significant influence is Grandad- main male role model in life
Someone who I was incredibly proud of.
Growing up hearing stories of the work he has done in his life- good and bad (well rounded). Detectives are glamorized by the media Hated paperwork!
Retired after a very fulfilling career.
Funeral surrounded by colleagues from years and years ago, clearly very family-based career, difficulties faced by the police strengthens relationships between cohorts greatly.

Mum:
Strong character in my life.
Deals with issues related to children safeguarding regularly. While preserving confidentiality I am aware of the struggles faced by many children and I have always been interested in roles that aim to protect these children.

Enactus:
Very interested in social enterprising- university students to make a difference in their communities while developing the skills to become socially responsible business leaders.
Ways of tackling issue of homelessness in Southampton

Q

Why do you want to be a DC?

A
  • Something I pride myself on is my communication skills, and so I find the idea of working with different people who have different perspectives exciting. Customer service from a young age.
  • My degree has involved a lot of research and analysis, piecing together information from different sources to apply to a clear, concise outcome, be it a presentation, essay, experiments or reports.
  • I want to be more challenged coming up with solutions that have a direct impact on actual human beings. Unsatisfied in a role that is focused around earning money as the motivation.
  • Finally, an important part is making my family proud and being a positive influence on those around me.

Q

What do you expect from the role?

A

Fast-paced, intense but highly rewarding. I think what appeals to me about the programme is that it allows people to be fast-tracked into these full frontal leadership rolls in a very short time. All the while being full supported by a mentor who you can voice concerns to.

Structured training- clear, goals to achieve.

Passionate people, who are at the top of their game and have the same motivations of compassion and collaboration.

Strong sense of team- family style environment- often testing so important to work together and support one another.

Q

What values do you believe are important for a police officer to have (explain why and the impact of officers having these values on communities)

A

Something that very much appeals to me is that “Value orientation” is the driving force behind organizational life in policing.

Care and compassion- dealing with people and potentially the most vulnerable points in their life. Supportive to victims and criminals alike.

Open-minded - not taking this at face value, being intelligent and inquisitive to understand the reasons how and why to encourage preventative measures as well as crime solving.

Decision making and taking control- being able to make fast decisions under stress and external influence, and having the confidence to do so.

Q

Why do you know about the graduate scheme Police Now offers?

A

2 years where you will receive amazing training and also experiences that you just won’t or can’t get anywhere else.

To transform the most challenged and deprived communities that we work in, and to do that by reducing crime and increasing the public’s confidence in policing.

Working hard and fast to streamline through the process is something exhilarating to me. But it is a reassurance also that I will be supported along the way also.

Q

What are the challenges that the force faces?

How am I going to help meet those challenges?

A

Local Policing- Communities becoming increasingly diverse and complex, with an increasingly aging society, necessitating a more place-based, sophisticated response. Wrote an essay on social polarization!

  • Using an improved understanding of vulnerability, both in physical and virtual locations, as a means of improving and differentiating service and protection. e.g Domestic violence - Identifying the triggers, alcoholism- send help

Terrorism has become more fragmented and harder to combat.

  • Establishing a common methodology that recognises different threats, geographies and population densities to map resource against demand, by working with partners such as the National Crime Agency and the Security Service

Digital Policing
Online crime has also grown dramatically. The internet has provided the opportunity to commit new types of crime
- A part of the digital world is the increasing abundance of digital evidence; from CCTV footage to emails to phone records, evidence has now gone digital and there is a requirement to ensure it is accessible, readable and has long term integrity,

Community engagement

  • Need for the community to be involved in the decisions Police make- special constables- unified community spirit
  • Procedural justice- the community is treated with respect and the police make the time to explain their decisions
  • Duty of reporting misconduct- courage to do so

Drug problems

  • University saw the ease in which people ruin their lives.
  • Messaging of dangers

Breaking the cycle of repeat offending

  • Treating ex-criminals fairly and with respect
  • Engaging them back into the community
