- establish rapport & build trust
- ask permission to talk about issue
- offer facts
- examine discrepancies
- express concern
Describe the contemplation stage
patient is considering possibility of making change but still unsure

Encourage making change
Done by:
- acknowledging discomfort w/ making change
- weigh pros and cons
- reinforce patient autonomy (his/her free choice)
Describe the preparation stage
Committed to making change in near future, but considering what to do

- offer advice/expertise about tx options
- consider barriers & how to overcome
- discuss what has worked in past
- encourage pt to let family/friends know about plans
