What are the six stages of how change takes place?
- Pre-contemplation
- Contemplation
- Determination
- Action
- Relapse
- Maintenance
Pre-contemplation
The person is unaware of their problem and they do not see any necessity to change their behaviour
Contemplation
The person begins to weighs the pros and cons of continuing with the behaviour versus changing it
They feel ambivalent about their behaviour
Determination
The person makes a decision to do something or Nothing
Action
The person decides on a plan of action and pursues this plan
Relax
This is when the person returns to the old undesired behaviour patterns. Relapses occur frequently and are part of the change process and is a potential learning opportunity for the patient
Maintenance
During this stage the person actively works on maintaining the change behaviour and actively avoid going back to the old and undesired behaviour. The person can either maintain the new behaviour or permanently exit the cycle or lapse
What is ambivalence
When a person becomes aware of their behaviour and that it is different from their beliefs morals values hopes dreams or not in Keeping with their future plans they feel uncomfortable about this
What are the five essential elements of motivational interviewing?
Express empathy Avoid arguments Develop discrepancy Roll with resistance Support self-efficacy
Express empathy
Acceptance reduces resistance and facilitates change
Avoid arguments
Arguments are counterproductive and increase resistance
Develop discrepancy
Discrepancy between behaviour and goals motivates change
Roll with resistance
New perspectives are suggested. On the person find solutions to problems that they themselves defined
Support self-efficacy
The individual will only at home to change if he or she believes there is a fair chance of success
