Motivation, Emotion, and Stress Flashcards
Define drive reduction theory
States that drives create uncomfortable internal states that the person innately tries to get rid of… ie they want to reduce the drives… “drive reduction theory”
Define the self determination theory
emphasizes the role of the three universal needs; autonomy, competence, and relatedness
Describe the incentive theory
explains motivation as the desire to pursue rewards nd avoid punishment
Describe the expectancy-value theory
the amount of motivation for each task is based on the individuals expectation of success and the amount that the success is valued
Describe the opponent-process theory
explains the motivation for drug use; as drug use increases, the body counteracts its effects; leading to tolerance
What are the three components of emotion?
cognitive, behavioral, and physiological
Name and describe the multiple theories of emotion
- James-Lange: nervous system arousal leads to a cognitive response..emotion
- Cannon-Bard theory: simultaneous arousal of the nervous system and cognitive response lead to action
- Schachter-Singer theory: nervous system arousal and interpretation of the context lead to a response
Describe what the various parts of the cortex are involved in.
Prefrontal cortex- planning, expressing personality, and making decisions
ventral prefrontal cortex- emotion
ventromedial prefrontal cortex- emotional responses ad decision making
Describe primary and secondary appraisal
Primary appraisal is classifying a stressor as irrelevant, positive, or stressful
Secondary appraisal-can the organism cope with the stress
What are the three stages of the general adaption syndrome?
- alarm
- resistance
- exhaustion
Describe the Yerkes-Dodson law
there is an optimal level of arousal that is necessary to perform; if it is too high or too low then the performance level will decline just because
Which side fo the frontal lobe is associated with positive emotions?
The left is! Think Emily is more positive than me and she is left handed
