define direction:
whether a person seeks out, approaches, or is attracted to certain situations - influences choices
define intensity:
how much effort a person puts in
define persistance:
the tendency to continue with an activity until a particular aim is achieved
what are the 3 foundations of motivation?
1) inner force
2) achieving full potential
3) essential for training, competition, rehab & perseverance
what is self-motivation?
part of your personality that is stable - refers to how hard one persists
what does self-motivation help athletes overcome?
adversity from:
1) injury
2) illness
3) staleness
4) burnout
5) losing to lesser opponents
what is intrinsic motivation?
playing sports for intrinsic reasons (enjoyment, pleasurable, social etc)
results of intrinsic motivation:
1) increased effort
2) improved concentration
3) positive experience
4) less likely to quit
what is extrinsic motivation?
people play sports for tangible rewards - behaviour is aimed towards separate outcomes
examples of extrinsic motivation:
1) trophies or medals
2) praise from coaches, family, friends
3) to avoid punishment
4) injury recovery and return to sport

define competence:
people like to feel confident at a task & that they are good at it - coaches can provide this by how they give feedback
define autonomy:
people need to feel like they are engaging with behaviour because they choose to - a sense of personal freedom
