what is motivation?
A process of inducing and stimulating an individual to act in a certain manner. It’s the direction and intensity of ones effort.
what are the two types of motivation?
- intrinsic
- extrinsic
what is intrinsic motivation?
it is the drive to do something because it’s personally satisfying or interesting, rather than for an external reward or pressure
what is extrinsic motivation?
when someone is motivated to do something based on an external goal, such as receiving an award
what is the definition of tangible?
visible reward given to an individual for achieving something. These may include money or trophies.
what is the definition of intangible?
external rewards which can’t be physically touched. Such as fame, recognition and praise.
what is over motivation?
when motivation levels become too high, even dangerous. this can lead an athlete to over-train due to the pressure to perform at a good level. it can also lead to a social withdrawal.
what is over training?
excessive training load that an athlete cannot cope with
what are the effects of over motivation?
- over confidence
- athletes can become complacent, leading to a lower level of performance
what is staleness?
ineffective training
what is burnout?
a physical mental state leading to a reduced sense on accomplishment. Can lead to a resentment of the sport.
how can amotivation effect performance?
can lead to individuals reducing effort or avoiding the activity or even quitting the sport altogether
what is amotivation?
absence of motivation. It’s a negative self- perception
what are the three theories of motivation?
- achievement goal theory
- self- determination theory
- Weiner’s attribution theory
what does the AGT theory prove?
motivation can be driven by goals. goals can be used to lead to differing responses
