Want
Something you desire for any other reason than it is required to live
Primary needs
biological (food, drink)
Secondary needs
psychological needs, social approval, sense of belonging

Theory of being born with motivation, no external factors provide motivation. EX: Mothers protect their baby
Clark Hull
Drive reduction theory: Motivated because our body is not in homeostasis, drive tells us to fix that.
Drive
State of tension or arousal caused by biological or psychological needs. Motivated to engage in behaviors that reduces drives in order to return to homeostasis
Homeostasis
Biologically balanced. The destroyed. EX: Hunger. Hunger causes drive. Then goal directed behavior so eating. Then needs satisfied.
Arousal theory
Theory that your physical environment can affect mental arousal. Individual has optional level of arousal.
Yerkes Dodson law
Performance increases with mental arousal (stress) but only to a point. When too high, performance decreases.
Maslov’s hierarchy of needs
To be motivated, must obtain physiological needs before achieving psychological needs.

air, water, shelter, reproduction, clothes
Safety needs 2
personal security, employment security, resources
Love and belonging 3
friendships, intimacy, family, connection
Esteem 4
respect, self esteem, recognition, freedom
