Motivation Flashcards
Why a doctor
- there are many reasons why I want to become a doctor
- as an academic discipline itself, it is incredibly fascinating to see how the body works
- being able to put this theory into practise is a privileged
- possess the required skills
- work part of a team and form personal and professional relations with others
- saw this in my work experienced which further reinforced how rewarding the profession can be, despite parts of medicine being unglamorous in nature
Why a doctor and not a nurse
- I am a very scientific person and would love to put my scientific foundation into practice to help save lives
- although nurses are able to sometimes diagnose and prescribe, studying medicine would give me a greater understanding and appreciation
- doctors —> clinical research
How are nurses helpful
- integral support with regards to the day to day running
- help alleviate the stresses and resources places on doctors
- nurses helping patients with day to day needs
- work experience had doctors checking up but it was nurses who were with them, feeding them etc
How to deal with emotions
- work experience saw lots of patients bed bound and felt hopeless
- shared my feelings with the doctor, est to talk about things
- treatments were necessary to ensure good quality of life
- patients have autonomy and must consent to treatment
- took the time to talk to patients
How will you manage your time
Understand the challenging part of med
I find that a schedule works
Step from GCSEs a levels was a jump and I needed a diary, blocking out my time really helped
Felt relaxed and not too overwhelmed throughout
Wont let workload take over completely, stress,
What’s made you reflect as a doctor
Whilst I was volunteering in a care home I would regularly talk to residents
I would ask them how their day was going etc and it was great to see how they had a smile on their face
I really think I made a positive impact on their day
Also great to see the teamwork displayed by the nurses, showed respect and camaraderie
Long hours
After more determined and motivated to pursue a rewarding career
What is the most important quality in being a doctor
All of the skills are interdependent
Having the ability to adapt your knowledge to make a positive impact on individual patients’ health needs
Without the knowledge you may not be able to assess the patient in the right way to better their life
Most difficult aspects of being a doctor
Most difficult aspects are personal sacrifices made
