- managers maintain close control over employees
- managers make all decisions
- motivate workers through money (piece-rate pay)

- five levels of human needs which employees need to have fulfilled at work
- only once lower level is met would worker be motivated by higher level
- workforce should offer differant incentives to help fulfill each level

Outline Herzberg theory?
- two key factors in a workplace: Motivators and Hygeine factors
MOTIVATORS: directly motivate workforce
HYGEINE: factors that can demotivate if not present, but dont motivate (pay, working conditions)

- workers are not motivated by money and are better motivated by having social needs met

What is employee engagement?
a workplace approach designed to ensure employees are commited to their organisation’s goals and values , motivated to contribute to organisational success and are ale at the same tume to enhance their own sense of well-being

- interllectual engagement (thinking about job and how to do better)
- affective engagement (feeling positive about doing a job)
- social engagement (takes opportunities to share work-related issues with others)

items an employee recieves in addition to their normal wage

- setting of targets for employees can ensure they are focused

- discourages a team based approach
- difficult to accurately measure performance
