Define motivation
Refers to the internal or external forces that arouse enthusiasm and persistence to pursue a course of action
What are the four categories that motive managers use
- Negative approach: threats and punishments
- Negative approach: tap into self doubts
- Positive apporoach: rewards such as pay raises, bonuses and praise
- Positive approach: help people enjoy their work and get a sense of accomplishment
What is the hierarchy of needs theory
Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is the theory that a person must have the bottom needs met before they can progress onto the next level. The hierarchy consists of 5 levels.
Define 2-factor approach to motivation
States that there are 2 dimensions contributing to an employee’s behaviour such as hygiene factors and motivators
What are the hygiene factors
Pay, policies and interpersonal relationships
What are the motivators
Achievement, recognition, responsibility and opportunity for growht
Define acquired needs theory
Certain types of needs are acquired during the individual’s lifetime such as need for achievement, affiliation and power
Define equity theory
This theory focuses on individual’s perception of how fairly they are treated relative to others
Define expectancy theory
Proposes that motivation depends on individual’s expectations about their ability to perform tasks and receive desired rewards
Define job design for motivation
The application of motivational theories to the structure of work to improve productivity
