Motion Unit Vocabulary Flashcards
An amount of space between two things or people.
Distance
The change of position in an object.
Displacement
The rate of change of a position of an object in any direction.
Speed
The total distance traveled by an object divided by the elapsed time to cover that distance.
Average Speed
The speed of an object at a specific instant of time.
Instantaneous speed
The rate of change of velocity.
Acceleration
A vector measurement of the rate and direction of a motion.
Velocity
To push or pull an object.
Force
The sum of all of the forces acting on an object.
Net Force
When two forces that are equal act upon each other causing no motion.
Balanced forces
When an object denies to change in its state of motion.
Inertia
An object will not change its motion unless a force is acting up on it.
Newton’s second law of motion
A force that resists sliding or rolling from one solid object over another solid object.
Friction
A force that keeps objects at rest.
Static friction
The resistance that is created when two objects slide against each other.
Sliding friction
