Motion + forces - Sp2 Flashcards
What is the definition of mass?
Amount of matter in an object (like the earth has a mass of 6.0x10(24)kg)
What is the definition of weight?
The force acting on an object as a result of gravitational attraction (in Newtons)
Equation needed to find force?
Force= mass x acceleration
Equation to find weight?
Weight= mass x gravitational field strength
equation to find weight as a force
force = mass x gravitational field strength
Equation to find resultant force on a falling object
Force= weight - distance
what is terminal velocity?
when the resultant force is 0 / a consistent force balanced
so when the air resistance is equal to the weight of a falling object, the resulting force is 0 therefore it is falling at a consistent speed.
this is terminal velocity
explain parachutes
using parachute = weight is less than drag + air resistance (parachute gives larger surface area) which slows fall - decreasing velocity
freefalling = weight is bigger than air resistance because people don’t have large surface area
which results in acceleration downwards that increases velocity
